Ty Dolla Sign - Free TC_cover

Last week, Editor in Chief Brandon Caldwell sang his praises for Ty Dolla $ign’s proper debut album, Free TC. The album has more than earned a few people’s attention, if most especially because its last two leaks – the Brandy and Kendrick Lamar-assisted “L.A.” and the smooth “Solid” featuring Babyface – perked plenty of ears. The album is available for public consumption as of midnight EST, but for those who still may not believe in the gospel of Dolla $ign, the rapper has partnered with Spotify to put up a free stream of the LP.

It turns out Caldwell more than had his reasons for insisting that “the ratchet R&B crown is currently occupied by Ty Dolla $ign and Free TC is evidence of it.” Free TC’s sixteen tracks benefit most when Dolla lets the guitar set a tone, but it’s hard to skip past a single song, even with the LP’s abundance of guest appearances.

Ty Dolla comes out swinging by following up “L.A.” with the smooth, ’00s R&B-sounding “Horses in the Stable.” “Straight Up” reminds why Jagged Edge had their strong run in the early 2000s, and Ty damn near sounds like a fifth member alongside the quartet. “Bring It Out of Me” sounds like summer in the winter and will absolutely take over the clubs for the next couple of months. And Dolla’s duet with Sevyn Streeter, “Credit,” is a simmering, finger-snap-driven slow burner of a lovers’ quarrel.

Is Free TC the release R&B in 2015 didn’t know it needed? That remains to be seen. For now, stream Ty Dolla $ign’s latest for the free down below. Free TC is available on iTunes now.
