Breaking up is hard to do. Javon Johnson, one of the few artists in Houston willing to translate his actual real life to the studio has rode plenty of gritty basslines to roll out the ups and downs of life. On “4:30 am”, a cut produced by Magoni, he pushes away the idea of heartbreak by punching away at his demons and issues like a speed bag. “My ex telling me she smoking & drinking … my phone filled with news but I don’t wanna kill you/ I just want you happy after all the shit we been through,” he raps on the constantly morphing track. It’s a shame considering how Javon Johnson spoke highly of his ex in a lengthy interview for Pigeons & Planes some months back and now, she may be instrumental in another way — helping him create the best music of his young career so far.
