Wondaland - Hell You Talmbout

Although Janelle Monae’s Wondaland Records imprint reveals itself to the world tomorrow with the release of the much-awaited The Eephus EP, they’re just as aware of the racially-charged, socially-awakening times they’re in. As such, they’ve issued what may well be considered the first protest song of 2015.

Dropped as a sort of surprise on the Wondaland Records soundcloud, Janelle Monáe, tweeted out “Hell You Talmbout” by calling the song a “vessel.” It comes off as equal parts that and a war cry – a six-minute embodiment of the “Black Lives Matter” and “Say Her Name”/”Say His Name” movements, “Hell You Talmbout” name-drops some of the more known Black lives lost – and a few lesser known ones – as a result of police violence over a backdrop of thundering drums and a tribal instrumental. Janelle, Jidenna, Deep Cotton, Roman Gianarthur, and St. Beauty come together to never let listeners forget what’s at stake… and to remind us that the list is certainly long as is, and may yet grow longer still. But that’s why we fight.
