One of the more pleasant surprises of 2015 thus far has been Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone, a collection of covers of the belated singer’s most known songs, done by contemporary R&B artists. Part companion piece to the recent Whatever Happened to Nina Simone documentary on Netflix and part overdue recognition of one of the pioneers of protest-driven soul music, Nina Revisited features the likes of Usher, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Common, Lalah Hathaway, Jazmine Sullivan, and even Nina’s real life daughter, Lisa.

We’ve previewed Usher’s contribution to the compilation, “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” but Jazmine Sullivan’s remake of “Baltimore,” Common & Lalah Hathaway’s “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black,” and Lisa Simone’s breathtaking cover of “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl” are all just as noteworthy. The 18-track album is available for purchase in stores and online now, as part of the new #NewMusicFriday initiative moving music releases to the end of the week as opposed to Tuesdays.
