Now THIS is the Usher we missed.

The R&B-turned-Pop-N-B crooner was one of many artists selected for the upcoming Nina Simone tribute album Nina Revisited, which features contemporary artists remaking covers of the belated singer’s most memorable tracks. Usher will be joined by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Common, Jazmine Sullivan, and even Nina’s daughter Lisa on the LP, but it’s Mr. Raymond’s remake of “My Baby Just Cares for Me” that looks to be one of Nina… Revisited’s standout tracks.

Over a smooth, laid-back instrumental loop that sounds like a cousin of the Fugees’ “Killing Me Softly” beat, Usher returns to the old form that defined his career for the first decade – soulful singing that emphasizes emotion rather than bombast and the party life. The only dancing “My Baby Don’t Care” calls for is a simple two-step, one that’s right in line with Usher’s insistence that his woman could care less about worldly things as long as she’s got him. “My baby don’t care for shows,”, Usher tells listeners, “my baby don’t care for clothes.”

Nina Revisited… A Tribute to Nina Simone is set to release on July 10th; but you can get “My Baby Just Cares for Me” as an early download by pre-ordering the LP here.
