Jean Deaux - Stay (Prod. Donnie Trumpet)

Producer Donnie Trumpet has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in recent months. Allegedly responsible for a majority of the sound that’s slated to appear on Chance the Rapper’s upcoming SURF album, Trumpet manages to craft sounds that are upbeat, funky, and that stay with you long after the track has ended.

But for once, Trumpet isn’t… well, trumpeting. The producer joins forces with Chicago songbird Jean Deaux on “Stay/Stars crossed,” the first single from Deaux’s upcoming sequel to her stellar yet slept on SOULAR SYSTEM: Dark Matters mixtape.

Jean Deaux – whose name might ring a bell because of her memorable feature on Isaiah Rashad’s Cilvia Demo by way of “Menthol” just last year – flourishes over murky beats. They give her voice an ethereal quality that’s at once ghostly and hypnotic. Trumpet provides exactly that in the backdrop of “Stay”: a low-tempo lullaby instrumental with tinkling keys, and warbles that allows Deaux’s lush voice to weave in, out, and around the beat. The end result is a three-minute slow burner that won’t let you leave easily.

Jean Deaux’s upcoming SOULAR SYSTEM: Vol. 2 project is on the way.
