For video game junkies, Madden has been the standard when it comes to football games. Thanks to EA having the official licensing agreement with the NFL to use players’, teams and stadium likeness, it’s kept 2K Sports out of the football world for years. The last effort from 2K, All Pro Football 2K8 allowed for players to in a sense build a team mixed with legends and really good retired greats. In other words, it was Ultimate Team before Madden even jumped on the bandwagon.

Rumors of 2K’s return to football have been floating around since last October when Joe Montana, coverboy for All Pro Football 2K& tweeted the following for the rumored Joe Montana Football 16. “So many things happening! Here is a teaser of what is coming. Stay tuned for more. #morethanarosterupdate #montana16”

Montana in a motion capture suit is a pretty damn big deal. It followed a similar tweet Montana sent out last July about Joe Montana Football 16 with “#youvewaitedlongenough #joemontanafootball16”. In other words, the only news we’ve gotten about Joe Montana Football 16 is from, you guessed it, Joe Montana.

But what if it’s true? What if we’re going to get some competition on the football side of things between 2K & EA Sports? I mean, the lone video game that EA gets right every year is FIFA and there should be plenty of fears on that side of things if 2K starts moving into the world’s most popular game.

We’ll keep you updated as things progress.
