Making his Saturday Night Live debut, D’Angelo not only brought Darkwing Duck vibes to the NBC stage but also brought ‘Black Lives Matter’ as well. Saturday night marked D’Angelo’s first televised performance since the 2012 BET Awards and his first live show since the release of his Black Messiah album.

Leading off with “Really Love,” and becoming our R&B despearado, the 40-year-old singer then closed his evening by holding a fist aloft while a red chalk outline laid before him for “The Charade,” his backing band the Vanguard wearing black “Black Lives Matter” & “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts. Watch both performances below. D’Angelo’s New York City takeover continues as he plays the legendary Apollo Theater later this week.
