Teedra Moses - California Vibes

“Sunshine in your winter time.”

That’s the tagline for Teedra Moses’s new EP, California Vibes, which tiptoed its way onto the internets first thing this morning in celebration of the artist’s “28 for the tenth time” birthday. The self-proclaimed “Lioness” of R&B finally appears to have a sophomore album – slated to be entitled Cognac & Conversations – on the horizon next year, and it remains to be seen whether that’ll mark her much-anticipated debut under Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group brand. Before that lands, however, Moses is closing out 2014 by independently releasing Vibes on her own.

Five tracks deep and featuring production from the likes of Donnie Cash, Thaddeus Dixon, and New Hampshire of 1500 or Nothin amongst others, California Vibes is mostly upbeat fare than we’re used to from Teedra, which may suggest that the singer is happier or freer than she’s ever been. Which is not to say that the songbird’s token soul is gone.

Indeed, the one-two punch of “Something Real,” where Moses yearns for something genuine in her relationships; followed by “Open Still” (which bears the project’s only features from J Black and Rebekah Muhammad) with its strumming guitar will resonate with female listeners long after they’ve ended. The latter is especially stinging, as Moses admits being mad at herself for trusting her lover and laments, “I f*cked with you ’cause I thought that you were cool”. And Moses wisely resurrects her slept-on single from last year, “Can’t Be Luv,” as the EP closer.
