Let’s be honest with ourselves America, the fifth season of Martin never happened. THanks to what happened in 1996 between Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell-Martin via a lawsuit of sexual harassment, the show never was the same and the fifth season is evidence of it. Now Lawrence is bringing back his most remembered and culturally significant vehicle back to television … with a catch.

Ashanti is playing Gina.

As WPGC reports, FOX and Lawrence have come together to revive the ’90s sit-com for the 2015 TV schedule. “Like many people, I grew up watching Martin and it was probably my favorite TV show ever,” Ashanti said about her reprising the legendary role. “I know it will be difficult for many people to see me as Gina, but I hope I bring a new dynamic to the role. I see it no differently than when Aunt Viv was replaced on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. At first the audience was not feeling the character change, but she eventually won them over. I am hoping I can do the same thing.”

We’re just hoping this revival of ‘Martin’ isn’t something that makes us immediately reach for our box set from seasons 1-4. This isn’t to shade Ashanti, rather it’s us wondering — why couldn’t Martin and Gina just kiss and make the hell up?

UPDATE: The link to the article at WPGC is dead. Which leads me to believe its a fake story. And the world can breathe a sigh of relief.
