If you don’t know by now, here’s how The Drake Effect works. Take Detroit spitter/singer DeJ Loaf for example. A relative unknown to some outside of the Motor City, the lyrics to her buzzing “Try Me” track eventually were quoted on Instagram by Drake and Wiz Khalifa offered up a remix. Since Wiz is going through bits of a messy divorce at the moment, we’ll omit him from this. Then Drake followed her on Instagram and the world slowly started gravitating towards “Try Me”.

“You know you’re getting somewhere when you got people like that are interested in you,” she recently told VIBE. “He didn’t have to say anything.”

At its core “Try Me” is threatening yet melodic, packing island vibes that take it from just being a Detroit rap song and make it something different. The video itself is just as slick with DeJ eating Rice Krispies next to shell casings and plenty of the D behind her. Not to mention ’90s baby love by rocking a Degeneration X jersey. It’s melodic and catchy. It’s not going to inspire dances but the moment you start hearing the chorus, it’s going to become bigger and bigger in your head.
