Watch the Debut Theatrical Trailer for the ‘Dear White People’ Movie [@DearWhitePeople @JSim07] Bradford J. Howard July 23, 2014 Flicks, TV/Movies 1 Comment When news broke in March that Lionsgate had acquired the distribution rights for Justin Simien’s Dear White People movie, it was a triumph – an even bigger one than the film’s winning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Lionsgate has finally lined things up for Simien’s movie to get a proper theatrical release; and Dear White People will officially land in theaters this fall. Last night, Lionsgate also gave the go-ahead to release the film’s first full theatrical trailer. Dear White People, loosely based on Simien’s own college experiences focuses on a group of Black students at the fictitious Ivy League institution Winchester University who rally, respond, and dialogue over just some of the stereotypes and issues they face being on a PWI campus – to borrow the film’s tagline, it’s “a satire about being a Black face in a white place.” Tyler James Williams (of “Everybody Hates Chris” fame), Tessa Thompson, Tionna Paris, Brandon Bell and the Allstate man Dennis Haysbert, to name a few, make up the film’s cast. The superb blend of sarcasm and satire will make you laugh out loud, and that’s just the trailer. Justin Simien’s Dear White People brings its message to the masses on October 17th.
