Today, Google is The Real MVP for Dedicating Its Doodle to Nelson Mandela [@Google] Bradford J. Howard July 18, 2014 News Today, July 18th, is Nelson Mandela’s birthday. It’s also Nelson Mandela International Day, a day of service so named after the South African revolutionary and civil rights. Nelson Mandela International Day was officially approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009; the Nelson Mandela Foundation Initiative says the International Day was meant to serve the dual purpose of “[honoring] Mandela and [inspiring] others to carry on his on efforts to ‘take responsibility for making the world a better place, one step at a time.” Today marks the first time that Mandela International Day will be celebrated, USA Today reports, since the Madiba’s death last winter in December. But, it’s bigger than that. Google’s doodles have been killing the Black History game all year long, but their doodle for today – on what would have been Mandela’s 95th birthday – is simply awesome. The Google homepage depicts the above image but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to the usual links to a Google search of Mandela himself, clicking on the “play” button to the right of the image takes you through a variety of drawings and graphics that contain some of Mandela’s most inspiring quotes. It’s not only creative but educational and enlightening, and perhaps the most fitting tribute to Nelson Mandela maybe ever. Experience it for yourself by heading over to Google’s homepage.
