Summertime in Houston means a 100 degree heat index, sundresses and, most importantly, summer concerts. 97.9 The Box has been known to take some heat in the past for not supporting Houston’s local underground music scene. But as of late, the station seems to have turned over a new leaf, appealing to the gripes and complaints by attempting to give the people what they want. It began with random spins from local artists increasing during each time slot over the last few months, and now, with their #979TheConcert series entering its second leg next month, The Box may finally be taking heed.

#979TheConcert debuted back in March with a handful of local rising stars performing in the Arena Theater, as a way to celebrate whose have “got next” in Houston. With so much indie talent in the city, this concert series is sure to appeal to fans who have continuously supported the underground for years. A full roster of Houston artists are on the bill to perform at the second #979TheConcert on July 10th at a TBD “secret location.” Powered by Mountain Dew and aimed at audiences age 18 and up, the concert will feature performances from Somo, Doughbeezy, Stunna Bam, Fat Pimp, MC Beezy, Senze, Quinn, and Delo. Doors are scheduled to open at the unknown venue at 7 PM.

It seems that everyone is looking to find new ways to entice fans and 97.9 The Box seems to have taken note of this as well, insisting that #979TheConcert tickets can only be won at The Box’s Pop-Up Shop locations. The event flyer even alludes that the tickets may be too good for your hard-earned coins given the line, “tickets that money can’t buy.” If you’re up for a lightweight scavenger hunt and want to continue to support the local talent, then visit www.theboxhouston.com for updates on when and where to find tickets.
