Ruby Dee, the actress best known for roles in Do The Right Thing, A Raisin In The Sun American Gangster and many others where she shined brightly on the stage and on the silver screen died Thursday at her New Rochelle, NY home.

She was 91.

Dee for seven decades was one of film’s more poignant figures, mostly in roles alongside her late husband Ossie Davis who passed in 2005. The duo, activities who had both met and befriended Malcolm X & Martin Luther King Jr. had worked tirelessly for the advanced rights of African-Americans. Davis gave the eulogy to Malcolm X’s funeral in 1965, later made even more important with the 1992 film X.

At least now she and Ossie can share another dance together.
