Michael Jackson - Xscape_cover

At long last, the project that turned plenty of heads when it was first announced but which many of us – this writer included – were more than a little wary about has arrived. The Michael Jackson posthumous album Xscape arrives in stores and online retailers today, its songs resurrections of original MJ recording paired up with sounds by modern producers. If you’re still not sure whether Xscape will be worth your time and/or money, then not to worry: Spotify is allowing listeners to stream the LP’s Deluxe Edition in full for free.

Propelled forward by lead singles “Love Never Felt So Good” featuring Justin Timberlake and title track “Xscape,” the album bears (re)production from the likes of Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Timbaland, and J-Roc, amongst others. The album is technically only eight tracks deep, but its Deluxe Edition doubles up to seventeen by providing not only the album versions of tracks but also the original recordings without the new filler added. It’s surreal enough hearing MJ on Timbaland beats but to hear Michael on the original versions of “Slave to the Rhythm” and “Blue Gangsta” is damn near haunting… and a reminder of the voice and sound we so dearly miss.
