Sam Smith | NBC

Sam Smith, our favorite English bartender turned “Latch” singer starred as the musical guest for Saturday Night Live this week and even if most people will be talking about the “Black Jeopardy” skit from Louis C.K. and company, Smith’s golden pipes and angelic vocals will no doubt be the second. The Brit opened his two-song set with a performance of the recently released “Stay With Me” and all of its gospel tinges getting released like a bird out of a cage thanks to a chorus behind him and very dim lights.

For his encore, Smith casually strolled into “Lay Me Down (Exquisitely)”, this time backed by a cello and a few strings. Watch both performances below. Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour arrives May 26th.
