Amerigo Gazaway - Yasiin Gaye

This is pretty fresh.

Producer Amerigo Gazaway has been putting together a series, “Soul Mates,” over which he “creates collaborations that never were.” So to speak, Gazaway mixes artists of the past with musicians of the present to both incite nostalgia and get us wondering about what might have been if only. Gazaway’s newest endeavor combines the sounds of Mos Def Yasiin Bey and Marvin Gaye on an upcoming collection of mixes fittingly entitled Yasiin Gaye, and which, according to Gazaway, “weaves Bey’s dense raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements” to create something fresh.

“Inner City Travellin’ Man” is the first leak from the upcoming LP, a just-over-six minute mix that uses a classic sound of drums, horns, and guitars that is all but perfectly built to bump while riding around in the whip. It’s a smooth cut in the vein of Aaliyah’s “Got to Give It Up Pt. 2” and Erick Sermon’s “Music” in terms of tossing in a groovy Gaye sample from “Inner City Blues,” and yet it stands apart from all others with the effortless looping of Marvin’s “oooh-ooh-ooohs” in small breaks between Yasiin’s bars lifted from “Travellin’ Man.” Gazaway may have a nice little sleeper project in his hands, and I can only hope that there’s a “Yumi Says” and “Sexual Healing” mashup on there. There just HAS to be.

Gazaway’s complete Yasiin Gaye project is expected to land on February 25th; though if you’re feeling “Inner City Travellin’ Man” already, you can snag the track now off Gazaway’s bandcamp.
