Dawn of Planet of Apes_Caesar

Rise of the Planet of the Apes turned out to be the one of the biggest surprises of 2011. In one fell swoop, it inspired viewers to root for Caesar – and to acknowledge the movie’s slightly racial “buck the system” undertones – and signaled a successful reboot of the Planet of the Apes film franchise, making up for that God-awful remake back in 1999 with Mark Wahlberg and Estella Warren.

We’ve been waiting to see what’s next for Caesar and his gang of primates after they broke out of the research facility at the end of Rise for a while now. Thankfully, next summer, Caesar’s story will continue with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes; and the movie’s first official trailer dropped last night.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place roughly a decade after the events of Rise, and the virus that was hinted to have spread around the world at the end of Rise has infected the Earth’s human population, thus giving way for the genetically-evolved apes to take over everything. The two sides – man and monkey – coexist, but their pact is broken once it becomes clear that only one species can thrive while the other is just surviving. Danny Elfman will lead the survivors of the human race to take back their planet, but if the look in Caesar’s eyes in the trailer is any indication, war is coming.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes lands in the theaters July 11, 2014.
