For The Free: Stream Bee Honey’s ‘Just Bee Cool’ EP

Bee Honey - Just Bee Cool_cover

Not so quietly, the collective known as The NUMB3RS Committee has all but made themselves a household name in Houston’s underground rap scene in 2013, if not certainly a stable worth keeping your eyes and ears on in 2014. With OneHunnidt as the flag-bearer, NUMB3RS pushed emerging second-in-command Jodii B. Basik to the frontlines and, as well, introduced a female contributor to the mix, the light-voiced Bee Honey. Initially spotted this year contributing background vocals to ‘Hunnidt’s “Jealous, TX” banger earlier this year, Bee stepped into the spotlight with her first single, “Going Back to Cali,” a month ago. Now, her stage set and mic set before a captive audience, Bee Honey is closing out her 2013 with her debut EP, Just Bee Cool. The EP is available on iTunes today, but Bee set loose a free stream of the project in full on her Soundcloud.

Clocking in at ten tracks – and one bonus track – Just Bee Cool runs just over thirty minutes in length. Production on the album comes at the hands of Trakksounds, Amaru TMN, Sound M.O.B., and Organic Kemestry, to name a few. The features, meanwhile, come from Curtiss King, Freddy Inglewood, and Tiarra The Jewel (who also contributes production to one track as well). Bee Honey’s fellow NUMB3RS men are noticeably absent on the EP but perhaps there’s a strategy to that – in so doing, Bee is able to establish herself apart from the rest of the gang, introduced but not eclipsed by her talented company. A mix of sounds from the jazzy (see the title intro track, on which Bee snaps her fingers and does a little scatting) to the upbeat, Just Bee Cool sounds like summer in winter. And the Freddy Inglewood and Tiarra the Jewel-featured “Whip It Like It’s Stolen” is all but guaranteed to be a fan favorite.
