A decade after closing out the 10th anniversary of the ESSENCE Festival, Prince and his all-female band are heading back to the Big Easy to help the festival celebrate its monumental 20th birthday. The Purple One was announced as the headliner for the 2014 Essence Festival to take place during July 4th weekend (July 4th – 6th) in New Orleans.

“Welcoming an artist as iconic as Prince back to the ESSENCE Festival for a 20th anniversary performance is incredibly exciting,” said ESSENCE Communications President, Michelle Ebanks. “The ESSENCE Festival is where we come together to connect to both our culture and our community, so we are pleased to support Prince and the Rebuild the Dream Innovation in advocating for our youth.”

The Purple Rain singer has made a few notable appearances in the past year or so, showing up in Austin in March for SXSW to perform alongside A Tribe Called Quest, closing out the Billboard Music Awards in May where he was honored with an ICON award and debuting new material from he and his band 3rdEyeGirl, including concerts in Las Vegas and a memorable party at his house in Minneapolis last month.
