Tinashe - Black Water_cover

One week after reminding some why RCA Records swiftly signed her to the label and awakening others to her lush yet subtle vocals with her new single “Vulnerable,” Tinashe has let loose her Black Water mixtape for public consumption.

Thirteen tracks deep, and with Travi$ Scott on the aforementioned “Vulnerable” serving as the only feature on the tape, Black Water does its damnedest to pack an array of emotions and sounds into a wealth of tracks. Production comes at the hands of Ryan Hemsworth, Boi-1da, Misfit Soundz, and Vinylz, to name a few, and even Tinashe herself hops on the boards for two of the songs. You would think that with thirteen songs, it’d be a little longer than its 34 minutes in full, but it isn’t.

Don’t get me wrong – you can help but enjoy the tease that is Black Water, especially with smooth cuts like “Midnight Sun” (especially that killer breakdown at the end of the track, courtesy of K Beatz) and the slow burning “Secret Weapon.” But in the end, it’s “just a taste,” to use Tinashe’s own words. Maybe that was the plan all along, to make an appetizer that gives listeners only just enough to get us to her album’s release in the early part of next year.
