Heartbreaking news out of Port Arthur arrived this morning as Weslyn Monroe, mother of the late Pimp C and a woman affectionately known as “Mama Wes” has suddenly passed. The news was met with sadness among the local rap community as well as those who grew up on UGK. Bun B, Pimp C’s partner in crime stated this underneath the IG photo above:

“Thanks to everyone that has sent prayers and condolences. She was a great woman. Nurture us from boys to men and made us strong enough to handle this industry. She was the one that kept us going when we didn’t wanna go anymore. She was the backbone of UGK, the definition of loyalty, the personification of unconditional love and the essence of what being Trill really meant. She’s finally reunited with her son. God bless you both. RIP Mama Wes. You gave everything to make us Underground Kings.”

Monroe was a prominent figure in the hip-hop community during the rise of UGK in the ’90s and especially following her son’s tragic passing in 2007. Her last known appearance was at June’s Free Press Summerfest.
