Only Florida: Police Shoot Unarmed Black Man Getting Cigarettes From His Car Brandon Caldwell July 30, 2013 News It’s official, Florida is the most dysfunctional state in America. 60-year old Roy Middleton was getting cigarettes out of his mother’s car when a nearby neighbor mistook the man for a robber and called the police. While rummaging through his mom’s car looking for the loose cigarette, Middleton says he heard a voice yell “Get your hands where I can see them!” Middleton claimed he backed out of the car with hands in the air but officers say he spun out of the car and lunged at he officers, prompting them to fear for their safety. They opened fire. “I heard the shots,” Middleton’s mother 77-year old Creola Walker said. “(The deputies) told me to close the door and not come out. They called an ambulance for him.” Middleton was shot in the leg, shattering a bone and requiring the insertion of a metal rod. Walker’s carport and town car were littered with bullet holes, she claiming she found 17 shell casings in her driveway. A press conference was called Monday by Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan who once more affirmed what the officer claimed what happened.
