Idris Elba Nelson Mandela

It’s been known for a minute now that actor Idris Elba had been tapped to play South African revolutionary and activist Nelson Mandela in the upcoming biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, but only recently have people gotten to see Elba in action. Those fortunate enough to have seen Fruitvale Station were treated to the first official trailer of Long Walk to Freedom  prior to the start of the film, and now the trailer has been made available online.

While Morgan Freeman played the icon a minute back in 2009’s InvictusLong Walk to Freedom is based on Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, which chronicles his early years. Director Justin Chadwick has Idris Elba portraying Mandela before the salt-and-pepper hair, acting as an activist, courting and eventually marrying first wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (played the lovely Naomie Harris), and even leading rallies against the South African government and its apartheid regime.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is expected to release in theaters this fall, although no release date has been yet been set. The trailer strategically arrives as the real-life Nelson Mandela remains in critical condition fighting for his life in a hospital in Pretoria.
