Big Sean - Beware (f. Lil' Wayne, Jhene' Aiko)

With the official announcement of Big Sean’s upcoming sophomore album Hall of Fame last week and its ensuing release date in August, comes what might well be the first major track from the project, “Beware.”

“Beware” is buoyed (no pun intended) by a smooth-riding instrumental from producers KeY Wane and Mike Dean. Underneath the bouncy beat, however, “Beware” details a break-up and the bitterness that still resides in both people after it’s over. Feature Jhené Aiko’s voice is breathtaking as ever, juggling between hurt on “Beware’s” cautionary hook – “Why you let these hoes/ Tear what we had, right apart?/ … You should beware, beware, beware/ Of a woman with a broken heart” – and being on the defensive in the song’s final lines.

Jhené and Sean’s chemistry is so good that “Beware’s” other feature, Lil’ Wayne, feels more like a third wheel, the crassness of his verse more of an interruption than an addition to Sean & Jhene’s story. Nevertheless, and its borrowed cues from Chrisette Michele & 2Chainz’s “Charades” aside, “Beware” is melodious, catchy, and should emerge as a summer hit on the radio.

Big Sean’s “Beware,” featuring Lil’ Wayne & Jhene’ Aiko, is available on iTunes now. Big Sean’s Hall of Fame album arrives August 27th.
