Those of us raised in Black households know that interrupting a Black woman while she’s talking is simply something you just don’t do without getting the taste slapped out of your mouth. Tuesday night, one woman learned that lesson the hard way (albeit figuratively, while the rest of us were schooled quite literally when we were children), courtesy of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Last night, the First Lady addressed a group at a private fundraising event held in northwest Washington. Michelle Obama had a 20-minute speech planned, but she was consistently interrupted by a heckler of some sort throughout the early parts of her speech. The heckler – now known to be Ellen Sturtz, member of the LGBT-coalition and special interest group GetEqual – wasn’t exactly speaking out against Michelle, so much as shouting and crying out demands for the First Lady to encourage Barack Obama to sign an executive order banning LGBT discrimination. Michelle soon had enough with the disrespect audacity interruptions, spoke into the mic, “One of the things I don’t do well is this,” and left the lectern to approach Sturtz face-to-face in the crowd.

According to reports, Michelle told Sturtz, “You can listen to me, or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.” At which the crowd voiced its support of Michelle staying – one audience member in particular telling Sturtz “you need to leave” – and Sturtz was soon escorted out of the fundraiser. Asked about her side of the story, Ellen Sturtz was quoted as saying that she “[First Lady Obama] obviously thought she was going to make an example of me or something. I wasn’t scared at all”… yet Sturtz also noted that “[Michelle] came right down in my face. I was taken aback.”

Either the swag that comes with being elected and getting to stay in the White House for four more years took over First Lady Michelle Obama, or – more likely – Michelle just wasn’t about to let herself be Joe Wilson’ed. And you likely expect reports from respectable news outlets like FOX News will likely soon be coming in regarding Mrs. Obama’s fulfilling the “angry Black woman” stereotype “aggression” but let us be the first to acknowledge Michelle Obama’s alumnus status from Bout That Life University. And if you ain’t know… now you know, America.
