“Crooked Smile”, J.Cole’s latest release from Born Sinner should feel a bit like the album’s first track “Power Trip”. R&B feature, light instrumental, more than understandable lyrics. Here’s what’s different – Miguel is replaced by TLC here and much like an Aaliyah feature these days, getting the voices of Chili, T-Boz & Left Eye on a record carries plenty of weight. “Crooked Smile” is all about imperfections, Cole cherishing everything about him in a “love me or hate me, this is who I am” manner. It’s not the most accessible song but it’s another crossover attempt in the same vein as “Power Trip”. It may sound like nothing else on the radio but that’s what Cole is going for these days – fighting every detractor by simply making songs – nothing trying to out rap everybody all at once.
