For all the stories you heard about gonorrhea (bka “the clap”) back in high school, you might want to toss the books out now. According to the Daily Mail UK, a drug resistant strain of gonorrhea has been discovered in Hawaii. The Centers for Disease Control has asked Congress for $50 million to find a new cure for the disease called H041 first discovered in Japan in 2011. The disease was also reported in Hawaii, California & Norway.

Here’s a few sex facts for you.

– Gonorrhea is the second most reported STI in North America.

– If left untreated it can cause a painful discharge and sterility in men and ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women.

– It’s especially common among people of the ages between 15 & 24.

– Gonorrhea could be “incurable by 2015” according to the BBC.

What makes matters worse is the report from Dr. Alan Christianson. Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine told CNBC, “Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days. This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly.”
