XXL Freshman 2013 cover

Since its inception, the XXL Magazine “Freshmen Class,” designed to highlight emerging – or, in some cases, previously overlooked – emcees in the rap game, has been a source of great debate and discussion amongst music heads. That tradition of debate and discussion will no doubt continue with the unveiling of XXL’s Freshman Class of 2013, the so-named “Best Ever” Class.

Much as they did on the airwaves and amongst the bloggerati, Top Dawg Entertainment made their mark on the list, with ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul both emerging as part of the Freshman Class. Ambassadors of The New Ratchet Chief Keef (selected as “The 11th Freshman”) and Trinidad Jame$ were also named as Freshmen.

Angel Haze, a fan favorite of a sort who in many ways had been overlooked – save her brief beef with Azealia Banks two strong projects in 2012, the Reservation and Classick EPs – got her just due, being selected as XXL’s second consecutive female rapper Freshman (following Iggy Azalea in the ’12 class). And Houston’s own Kirko Bangz, after more or less two years of aggressive over-hustle, finally caught XXL’s eye after a banner year in 2012 which included turning “Drank in My Cup” into a chart-topper breeding numerous  remixes and landing solid features on projects for established names like Meek Mill and Freddie Gibbs.

Two painfully glaring omissions on the list, however. JAMLA Music representative and Day & A Dream #BreakoutQueen Rapsody – considered by many an obvious selection, if not a favorite to take the fan-voted “People’s Champion 10 Spot” on the list – was all but snubbed. And Chicago emcee Chance The Rapper was also left off the list (likely because he’s still a relatively new name), a decision that XXL may regret when the rapper drops his Acid Rap project next month.

The ensuing Freshman Class freestyles will start dropping on April 8th. So be sure to check back with us around that time for those.
