As part of NPR’s First Listen series, soul enigma Bilal returns after 2010’s Airtight’s Revenge with A Love Surreal in a much more funkier composition. With plenty of heavy jazz elements in tow, the singer’s first two releases from the LP, “Back To Love” and “West Side Girl” evoke slight influences from Flying Lotus’ canvas of bleeps and intoxicating head nod production and vocal stretches that reminds many of deep cuts Prince. That latter is no more evident on “Winning Hand” as behind a steady drum and bass guitar loop, Bilal croons with seduction, “I roam these streets on a whim/Until you came along … with you on my side lucky me”.
