Last night, Kendrick Lamar was in New York City on Hot97 for Funkmaster Flex to “freestyle”. Or rap something he had dancing around in his head while Flex fawns over everything K Dot spits. That’s pretty much the small summation of what happens here as Lamar rips through Prodigy’s “Keep It Thoro”, Nas’ “Nas Is Like” and Wu-Tang Clan’s “Wu-Tang Ain’t Nothin’ Ta F Wit”. Thing is, everybody does these things for all radio stations (maybe not the local station here but that’s another story) and the mystique of a radio freestyle pretty much died out with the expansion of media formats.

The apex were the Roc-A-Fella/Hot 97 freestyles and watching Cam’Ron count a stack while spitting on Rap City but let us step off the curmudgeon box and listen to Kendrick Lamar murder some classic New York instrumentals.
