As though her dropping of the all-kinds of solid Reservation EP and her standout appearance in a cypher at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards weren’t enough, Angel Haze is still hungry and still putting out new material.

The female emcee’s newest mixtape, Classick, is reminiscent of last year’s The Voice EP, with Angel freestyling over instrumentals both timeless (such as Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)”) and modern (Lupe Fiasco’s “B*tch Bad”). While being six tracks deep Classick may appear to be painfully brief, the length isn’t important – rather, it’s the lyrical dexterity which Haze displays over each beat. There’s something to be admired about the way Haze both channels Missy Elliott’s flow yet adds her own speedy flavor to “Gossip Folks,” and it’s hard to say what’s more impressive: Haze’s jarring if refreshingly raw honesty on her rendition of Eminem’s “Cleaning Out My Closet”; or Haze breaking form from her usual rock-hard image and singing beautifully on the majority of her version of Erykah Badu & Common’s “Love of My Life.” To borrow Angel Haze’s own words, this girl be werkin’ forreal.
