Spike Lee’s return to film after a brief hiatus doing television work, finds him somewhat dipping his toes in the same territory that Tyler Perry has taken over. Now, Red Hook Summer follows the story of an Atlanta youth sent to New York for the summer with his reverend grandfather in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Sounds overtly religious until you realize who’s behind the lens and how much gravity lies in the message. Spike has always pained Brooklyn, his home in many of its lights, whether they be gentrified, criminal, radical in terms of race relations and more. Not to mention there’s supposedly a cameo from Mookie himself of Do The Right Thing Fame? Count us in. Red Hook Summer is set to arrive in theaters this August. Watch the trailer below.
