Having held the project in earnest since late March, ANTHM’s proper releasee of When We Were Kings comes with good timing as his ever growing buzz is started to gain the attention of writers and industry big-wigs alike. There’s no real filler to be found on WWK, just lyricism and noteworthy concepts stretching over some of hip-hop’s classic instrumentals.

“Never Do” from The Roots was already seen as a tape highlight and a welcome introduction into the world of the former Duke grad turned erstwhile rapper but to condense a story into a 30-minute tape is a concept few actually pull off. Yet given his deft ability for storytelling, the man who dubs himself NoCosign on Twitter easily exemplifies how a rapper should conduct his business on a mixtape: no frills, straight to the point and engaging.
