Mixtape: Chels – True School For The Moon Children

It takes a sizable amount of guts to lead off any project, whether it be an EP, mixtape or album with some spoken word from Shyne. But Chels, the New Orleans wunderkind who’s Big Easy drawl will never escape any of her rhymes for good reason decided on letting Shyne set the tone for her latest release True School For The Moon Children. Lifting drums, woozy horns and more litter the tape, sixteen cuts in all where Chels expounds on a similar palate of afrocentricism, plight and the models of success. She wants to hop in a vat of money ala Scrooge McDuck when she references riding in a Mercedes but doubles back on “History” with Luke St. John, stating rather emphatically that she’ll never compromise herself just to achieve a dollar.

Production from Lex Luger, Questlove, Swiff D & more amplify her vocals, a child of New orleans who’s seen both growth and struggle. Not just as an artist but as a 19-year old looking for more in the world. She’s moved far beyond the Badu cosign into a realm where her voice, her message is starting to gain steam with every syllable and every resounding chorus.
