The end of Nitty Scott’s summer gets dreamily tucked around 90s horns and the playful nature of a young woman who spent a whirlwind amount of time across the country, missing flights to SXSW (she spent a few hours in Houston, rocking cyphers for BET and having the sort of national debut few emcees regardless of sex feel.

Her recent mixtape release, Doobies x Popsicle Sticks comes equipped with a 2DopeBoyz co-sign that’s existed since her breakthrough on a Miami radio station in 2010 and features from Tanya Morgan and 6th Sense. Towards the end of “Auntie Maria’s Crib”, the tape’s lead single she describes why she brands herself “Nitty Scott, MC” and remains steadfast about making such you say the whole thing “like A Tribe Called Quest”. In her words, “The obvious emcee … I’m here to embody a culture, rock the crowd and not just entertain you with words.”

Additional production from J. Period, J57, The Good Reverend Dr. and others give Doobies x Popsicle Sticks the sort of 90s nostalgia feel that Mac Miller’s tapes dish out, except that Nitty stands out a hell of a lot more on lyricism than catch lighting in a bottle appeal. There’s comedy on “Walk Like A Duck”, straightforward spitting over multiple instrumentals ala “jackin’ for beats” on “FeminiNITTY” and more. It’s sort of endearing hearing her recite her Unsigned Hype column in The Source, a life long hip-hop fan getting a dream come true.
