Heavy D, the Overweight Lover and one of hip-hop’s first true crossover acts passed suddenly today in a Los Angeles hospital. He was 44. Hev parlayed his music career – which featured such hits as “Now That We’ve Found Love”, “Is It Good To You” and others – into works in TV, film, as well as production.

Hip-Hop hasn’t come close to replicating Hev in the slightest. In a sense, Hev was the first charismatic rapper who could easily transition into hard records as well as soft ones; not to mention, he appealed to an audience that lived well beyond the realm of boombap.

Rest in peace to Waterbed Hev.
