KTSU’s “Takeover Crew”: Keeping College Radio Alive
College radio is a dying field. With most stations getting squeezed out in favor of more commercial operations, the authenticity of the radio is about as real as your favorite ass at the strip club. Sure, the personalities are still there attempting to give life to a somewhat stale medium that plays the same cuts on the hour but at what cost? They’ll be gone and moved to a more broader locale with flexibility within the year.
KTSU, Texas Southern University’s radio station is the only station college wise in Houston that lets its students bring something more than just advertising drives and the same Top 40 material. Friday night is hip-hop night and the resident takeover crew gets to do what they have done for a little over two years now, put together a quality radio show with the lone censor being the FCC.
With a revolving legion of personalities, all of whom are students or connected to the university in some form or fashion the “Takeover Crew” can live out the dreams of many without compromising a single thing about themselves. With in a way is what college radio was intended to be when the airwaves started cracking past the AM dial way back when. Music is their vehicle, their voices as weapons and in the hilarious clip above, they have a knack for comedic timing.
At least you know the crew’s leading lady Rebecca Mac does keeps things lady like by censoring herself from reciting the no so kid friendly portions of a Killa Kyleon freestyle but can still offer a one finger salute with pride.
