Highly acclimated within Houston is John Dew, artist first, educator second, part time producer and promoter. It’s not shocking that Dew, a member of the T.H.E.M. supercrew has a few different personalities and quirks that may set him apart from the rest. He doesn’t have the mind behind the boards of say a Jett I. Masstyr and he’s not the highly energetic Hollywood FLOSS but Dew is a crafty wordsmith and may be the most balanced of the bunch.

After the early release of his Summertime Johnny Vol. 1.9 tape, creating something such as TechNASA may feel like Dew’s abandoning his pimpish persona. That’s a gammon as even though Dew wants to influence newfound fans with lyricism, he’ll rep burnt orange only when it’s embers off of a cig.

TechNASA pairs him up exclusively with DJ Cozmos for thirteen tracks, all with varying sounds. Cozmos does make certain his input on tracks is evident from barring Dew’s bars on the Alexander O’Neal sampled “Lift Off” to allow his spacey chimes and drums breathe. The space age production isn’t limited to a small helping as Cozmos gives the Bee Ardoin assisted “What’s Stopping You” distorted vocals and piano stabs ready for techno clubs.

In spirit, Dew makes the ambitious homogeneous mix of Pimp C & J Dilla as buttery smooth as possible. His lyrics don’t immediately leap into an instant quotables section but they do well enough to get imbedded in your head for a while.  His “stand by and report” stance on “Take It Slow” serves as the album’s stand out cut, a tell tale effort about a female drug dealer that Dew can’t help but be enticed by.

Summertime Johnny still reps for the H, heavily. “For The City” with Jack Freeman, Propain & Yung Truth aligns itself with the laid back city anthem class, citing numerous landmarks while Pro understands his newfound positions as attractor of lesbians and gatekeeper of the city. His singing on “The Funeral” with hasHBrown could have been easily avoided or high graded sh*t talk as Cozmos’ chop of El Debarge’s “All This Love” skates right into hasH’s “destroy all wack emcees” style verse.

Dew understands his lane quite well. He takes aim at small pockets and circles, unwilling to be the greatest at one singular position but above average to great in all. He takes nothing away from TechNASA but rather adds to it courtesy of great production from Cozmos and his own moments of glory. Summertime Johnny may have been retired for a single project but John Dew still owns the image, no matter who he’s going for.
