Drake – Headlines

The last few months have both helped and hindered anticipation for Drake‘s upcoming album, Take Care. Drake was mostly off radar after his debut, Thank Me Later, dropped in June 2010; in fact, we didn’t really hear from him until earlier this year, when he featured on Rick Ross’s “Made Men.” So when Lil’ Wayne’s list of Young Money’s releases for 2011 popped up and a Drake album was listed, many were skeptical. How could the man have an album in the works when we had YET to hear a single?

Recent efforts “Trust Issues” and “Marvin’s Room” hinted that Drake might go back to the introspective sound that made his So Far Gone mixtape such a big hit; and some fans are (rightfully) bitter Drake didn’t capitalize on using “I’m On One” for his own single. So, how do you reassure your fans and the masses you’ve still got it? Simple – revisit the formula that made your first album’s single a winner.

“Headlines,” the first official single for Take Care, has Drake pairing up again with “Over” producer Boi-1da & Noah “40″ Shebib. The same epic build-up in the opening instrumentation is there. The same rapid-fire flow straight out the gate is there. The same minimal chorus is there. Hiding behind “Headlines’” banging beat and lines like “Started not to give a fuck and stopped fearing the consequence,” however, is a slightly frantic tale of a man worried he got comfortable in the rap game, but determined to avoid a sophomore slump. If, as Aubrey says, the real really IS on the rise, then by all means, out with the fake and in with the Drake.

Take Care drops October 24.
