If you’re in and around Houston’s hip-hop concert scene, then you have either seen or been privileged to meet Marco Torres. The Houston native and freelance photographer for the Houston Press has been on the scene for numerous events and concerts around the city, most recently hitting Trae Tha Truth‘s Street King show at House of Blues (as well as having his photos featured on numerous hip-hop blogs and magazines). Since we bump into each other on a frequent basis, I pitched to Marco the idea of spotlighting five of his favorite shots from various events in the city and speak on each photo in his own words.

Honorable mentions? Try these shots of Slim Thug, Bun B & Devin The Dude. Time to hear Marco explain himself.

#5: Fat Tony @ Spec’s Liquor Warehouse, Midtown Houston TX, November 2010
MT: I followed the homie Fat Tony around one night on assignment for The Houston Press. He had just released his RABDARGAB album and was on his way to the record release party at The Mink. We hit up The Tipping Point for some new kicks and then Spec’s for a bottle of Hennessy. I love the depth of field of this photo, and how fucking cool he looks just chilling there. He ended up using this for his SXSW profile photo, which is a pretty big deal.

#4: Camera in the Crowd @ Verizon Wireless Theater, May 2010
MT: This was taken at a Drake concert, and it was my favorite shot of the night. I was focused onstage and turned around for a second and saw this in the crowd. I swung around and without having time to adjust my camera settings, I focused and snapped this image. I didn’t know what I had actually captured until I got home and downloaded the photos.

#3: Lupe Fiasco @ House of Blues Houston, April 2010
MT: I love the dynamic lighting of this image, and the emotion on Lupe’s face is perfect. I had seen Lupe perform three times here in Houston before this show, so I was not very excited to see him again. But my little brother is a huge Lupe fan, so I brought him along with me on assignment. The show turned out amazingly awesome and I captured this great photo. My brother still uses this photo as the wallpaper on his cell phone.

#2: Chingo Bling – Southeast Houston, November 2010
MT: Chingo invited me to tag along one night when he had a show at a club down in the Southwest, near 59 South & Gessner. He wanted me to capture candid shots of him backstage. I decided that black & white was the way to go. None of the photos I took that night were posed, and this one was the obvious winner. The image has been used for the poster promoting his sold out House of Blues show, and also on his last mixtape cover.

#1: Jay-Z @ Houston Toyota Center, BP3 Tour, February 2010
MT: When I found out Jay-Z was hitting Houston for his latest tour, I made sure to request this assignment early. He is definitely one of my favorite rappers ever.
