Looks like somebody just hit the top bar at the end of a Super Mario Bros. level in terms of getting extra racist.

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard of all the toils and troubles that people of color have gone through since the dawn of America: Slavery, prison population, terrible television that highlights our worse and hardly our best, Katrina and not to mention the police officer in Bellaire, TX who was found not guilty in the wrongful shooting of an unarmed African-American male. Then Arizona decided to stir the pot with the SB 1070 law that basically gives the police in AZ free rule on locking up any person they suspect is not a legal citizen of the United States.

Then there’s the law banning ethnic studies in Tuscon schools.

Jan Brewer, Governor of Arizona signed another doozy into law and this one in particular bans classes like African-American Studies, Mexican-American literature and others aimed at a particular race. Which is funny considering that the Tuscon school district is majority *gasp* Hispanic.

The measure prohibits classes that advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group. It also prohibits classes that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government.

I must raise my right eyebrow ala this man at this statement. What does that say about English literature or other works that uplift one race against the plight of another? Is all that banned to or is it mainly subjective to whatever may be taught on a particular day? Cause if you really want to interpret the law the way it’s written, you possibly couldn’t teach anything except Shakespeare.

Or maybe not even that.

The way Tom Horne put it when he spoke to the Huffington Posts, he “believes the Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people. Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race.”

Then what are you going to tell those kids when the leaders of the state basically get to pick and prod every single Hispanic in the state (that is not a member of a sports organization since they’re easily identifiable) about whether or not they’re actually citizens?

Guess you might wanna get out of Arizona if you don’t wanna harm the children & their learning environments.
