I Gots to Give You A Zero: AKA Edition

I love the AKA’s (well, the majority of prestigious African American fraternities/sororities) but this … this is a little much. I know they get a rep for being well, siddity but this? Oh man…

Props to Mr. Fantastic for passing this through for me.

Eight members of a prominent black sorority have filed a lawsuit against the organization’s president, accusing her of mismanaging funds and commissioning a $900,000 wax statue of herself, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Alpha Kappa Alpha President Barbara McKinzie and some board members face charges that they purchased a $1 million life insurance policy for McKinzie and arranged a four-year, $4,000 monthly stipend for the former accountant after she leaves her post. The suit also accuses McKinzie of charging nearly $400,000 in personal expenses, like lingerie and jewelry, to the Chicago-based sisterhood’s American Express card.

McKinzie defended herself in a statement Tuesday, questioning her accusers’ motives and said the wax statue, along with another of the sorority’s first president, only cost $45,000.

McKinzie holds an MBA from Northwestern University and is the former comptroller for the Chicago Housing Authority, according to her biography on the sorority’s website. Alumni include poet Maya Angelou and civil rights icons Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King, the Sun-Times found.

900 grand. For a statue. Of yourself.

I hate to do this one but Alpha Kappa Alpha – for making this strange woman your president, I have to give you a zero.
